Overview
This course examines the concepts, architecture and techniques used within modern GSM networks. The functionality and operation of each network element is explained, together with how they interact to provide services to the end user.
Topics, which include value added services, access to the internet, data services and billing issues, are all described in a clear, concise presentation format to ensure the delegate acquires a good overall understanding of the modern GSM network.
The impact of GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, CAMEL, and WAP are discussed, together with the emergence of UMTS.
Course Objectives
- Create a diagramatic representation of the GSM System Architecture, describing the role and basic operation of each element.
- Describe the structure and main features of the GSM radio interface, understanding the options available in terms of voice coding, user data rates, resource allocation, and channel mapping
- Follow and describe the basic GSM procedures, including mobility management, connection management and security functions
- Explain the main issues regarding interworking with external networks, including the PSTN and other GSM networks
- Discuss with confidence basic GSM procedures including Handovers and Location Updates
- Describe the enhancements to GSM that have been specified to enhance the user experience including: High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Customised Applications for Mobile Enhanced Logic (CAMEL)
Course Requirements
A basic appreciation of telecommunications is an advantage but is not essential.
