Advanced Search Help

Advanced Search offers additional options for making your searches more precise.

In order to refine your search query it is important to consider the options available when using the free text search field.

Free text field logic:

Search Logic Example Explanation
word vodafone Returns all documents containing that word. Case insensitive. Plural matching is automatic - So searching for "mobile" includes searching for "mobiles"
phrase mobile tv Returns all documents containing that phrase (the two words not necessarily appearing next to each other).
quotes "monthly subscribers" Returns results for the exact phrase (the two words appearing next to each other).
AND regulation AND broadcast Returns all documents that contain both the first term and the second term. A "term" can be a single word or complete phrase (no quotes are necessary around a phrase). The search term AND must be capitalised.
OR subscribers OR users Returns all documents that contain either the first term or the second term or both. A "term" can be a single word or complete phrase. Most useful when searching for synonyms of words. The search term OR must be capitalised.
NOT subscribers NOT CDMA Finds documents that contain the first word, but do not contain the second. The search term NOT must be capitalised.
NEAR subscribers NEAR Africa Returns all documents where the first term appears nearby the second term. "Near" corresponds to 50 words, which is intended to be roughly the size of a paragraph. If two words are close together, then the chance of them being related is increased. The order of terms bears no weight. The search term NEAR must be capitalised.
wildcard subs* Use asterisks as a wildcard for partial matches.
weighting motorola^3 mobile Use caret to weight the search to favour a word or phrase.
numrange 2000..2005 Returns results containing numbers in a given range. Add two numbers, separated by two periods, with no spaces, into the search box along with your search terms.

When using the free text search field you can combine the options above. For example the search below looks up the complete term 'mobile subscribers' returning results between the years 2000 and 2005 with a weighting of 3 times greater relevance to the search term '2000..2005'.

Example combining free text search field options:

"mobile subscribers" AND 2000..2005^3

You can restrict your search to find results from the past 1, 3 or 6 months or from the past year by using the 'Select date range' drop-down option. For a specific date range, use the 'From (DD-MM-YYYY)' and 'To (DD-MM-YYYY)' fields to enter dates to search between. You must use the convention date-month-year, for example 05-12-2005.

Filter your search to return results either from within the full document or from within the document title by selecting the options in the 'Filter results' field. You can also use the filter option to return results from all documents, or just from the documents that you have subscriber access to.

Select from the drop down lists to search for results by subject, article type and region or nation. To select more than one option in each field hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.

Company type options can be selected in a similar way to filter your search by the company names you select. Select companies from fixed operators, mobile operators, telecoms vendors, and or media company types. To select more than one option in each field hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.

Select 'run search' once you have selected the parameters of your search.

Search Free Text

Type your search query into the search field at the top of each page to search the site. You can use multiple search terms to search for articles and data. Using multiple search terms will often give you more relevant results.

Searches are not case sensitive. By default telecoms.com only returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms. Keep in mind that the order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results. To restrict a search further, just include more terms.
